Kiwi's Knee-Jerk Gun Ban

By George Devinney. April 3rd, 2019

"Ban the gun" - tragic proof of how a major mass murder event is used as the excuse to penalize law abiding people. From New Zealand Parliament site, "Changing New Zealand's Gun Laws":

What is the bill about?

The bill recognises the harm that results from the misuse of semi-automatic firearms. To remove these sorts of firearms from circulation and use by the general population in New Zealand, the bill proposes banning semi-automatic firearms, magazines, and parts that can be used to assemble prohibited (banned) firearms. For the full detail of the items that would be banned under this bill, please read the bill on the website.

Read the Finance and Expenditure Committee's media release on the bill.

What does the bill mean?

New Zealand's firearms laws divide types of firearms into different categories. This bill proposes expanding the category of firearms that are prohibited to include most semi-automatic firearms and some shotguns. It will not include firearms commonly used in farming, hunting, and recreational communities. These firearms have a limited magazine capacity.

This type of approach is something seen more and more in the U.S. as time goes on. Pittsburgh PA has tried to enact a ban (despite the PA preemption clause) on "assault" weapons since the synagogue murders, and the Parkland murders have also generated attempts at further 'gun-control'. Rights are being ever more eroded despite the tired statement that "we aren't going to take your guns away" - it is the tried and tested creeping incrementalism aimed at ultimate total confiscation. New Zealand gun owners are the sad recipients of emotion driven control and all because of one lunatic.
