People often ask me why Jews rarely vote for Republican candidates.

In the past, the reasons might have seemed obvious. Most Jews favor extensive government involvement in everyday life; the Democrats fulfilled that promise. Today, with the Bush administration increasing both the overall size of government and social-spending programs at a far faster rate than Bill Clinton did, Jews' aversion to the GOP is more of a mystery.

Following many conversations with left-of-center Jews after Temple services, I've come to a conclusion. There is one reason above all that 3 in 4 of my fellow religionists continue to mark their ballot for the "D" rather than the "R."

Republicans lack one vital trait that both Jews and gun owners demand from their representatives. To learn what
