The Dilemma of "Gun Control"

Share/Bookmark

A retired NYPD Police Chief, Richard P. Rosenthal, responds to comment made by San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne, which would seem equally applicable to statements made by Chicago's Chief of Police McCarthy. Following the conclusions we show some information for Police Chiefs Lansdowne and McCarthy.

I've read the comment of San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne. While I am confident the chief's position is a reflection of his personal philosophy I'm troubled by the de-facto social tier system such a position creates. There would be those who may possess firearms -- law officers as well as "special people"-- and "all others."

As a law officer for over forty years of my life I have as much desire to protect this nation's citizens as any American. Lobbying for the ability of honest, law-abiding people to protect themselves causes me serious concern.

San Diego (a town I know well as my sister and mom live in the area) is a nice place with a very restrictive attitude as to whom may possess firearms out of their homes. It is (this is my understanding) virtually impossible for a "normal" citizen to acquire a permit to carry a concealed handgun. Thus the multi-tiered system I alluded to. Everyone is equal, it's just that some people are more equal than others.

I find this mindset consistent with those who would severely limit the right of individual citizens to procure firearms. My gut instinct is, such individuals, at least the majority, hope to effectively remove firearms from our society. Except, of course, for certain groups. As a long time law officer I'm personally uncomfortable with such reasoning. There's a reason the majority of law enforcement officers have concern over the firearms control issue. I suspect Chief Lansdowne is in the minority in regard this issue.

"San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne is fully supportive of the Obama/Feinstein gun grab, and says if lawmakers play it right Americans can be completely disarmed within "a generation."

Lansdowne has gone on record saying: "I could not be more supportive of the president for taking the position he has. I think it's courageous with the politics involved in this process. [And] I think it's going to eventually make the country safer."

"Chicago's Chief of Police, who previously blamed "government-sponsored racism" and Sarah Palin for Chicago's gun violence, declared that the lawful exercise of the Second Amendment was a threat to public safety.

McCarthy opined that the 2nd Amendment limits citizens to owning smooth-bore muskets. McCarthy went on to say that he believes that the 2nd Amendment supports mandatory liability insurance for firearm owners and the mandatory application of GPS tracking devices to civilian owned firearms."

Refer to the "Sandy Hook Index" for an archive collection of material we have shown since the events at the Newtown Elementary School. Much is directly resulting from that but also there are items simply clarifying various aspects of the "gun control" issue which has been such a hot button topic again.
